Interview of Pauline Cunningham as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Cunningham’s home in Fredericton, New Brunswick on the evening of 28 March 1979. Cunningham talks about: her early schooling in New Brunswick and motivation to pursue a teaching career; professional preparation at the University of New Brunswick and the University of Toronto; a comparison of the programs of physical education at the two universities in the mid-1940s; recollections of early programs in physical education in schools in New Brunswick; her appointment to and responsibilities in the Division of Physical Education within the Department of Education of the Province of New Brunswick in 1948; her work with summer schools and organizing teacher workshops; a discussion of physical education in New Brunswick with particular reference to elementary schools; experiences at the University of London Institute of Education and a visit to Scandinavian Countries in 1957 and 1958; the role of the classroom teacher in teaching physical education in elementary school grades; early experiences as supervisor of physical education in New Brunswick schools; the regionalization of education in New Brunswick today and functional organization for physical education; involvement with community sports programs; involvement wit Canadian Officials Ratings Boards; reflections on dance, locally and nationally, and its place in physical education and recreation; thoughts on the future of dance in school programs; study at New York University from 1951 to 1953 and reference to Dr. J.B. Nash and others; her involvement with the Maritimes Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation in formative years; involvement with programs for children with special needs; her personal philosophy of physical education; Participaction and its effect on general participation by Canadians in physical activities.
