Interview of Nora Chatwin as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Chatwin’s Toronto apartment on the morning of 13 November 1978. Chatwin speaks about: her early background in England; a teacher-exchange program and early experiences in Timmins, Ontario in 1946; recollections of the kinds of physical education programs in effect in northern Ontario in the late 1940s in primary and elementary school grades; a comparison of physical education programs in Canadian and British schools; her teaching experience with the Ottawa Board of Education; her early involvement with summer courses in physical education at Guelph; comments on the Strathcona Trust program; recollections of duties and responsibilities as Supervisor of Physical Education with the Ontario Department of Education from 1952 to 1973; comments on observed changes in elementary school physical education in Ontario over the years; equipment and facilities; introduction of the Canadian Foldaway Climber; the expansion of supervisory services in Ontario in the 1950s; thoughts on the place of specialists in physical education from 1947 to 1973; reminiscences on the preparation for publication of Physical Education for Primary Grades (1956) and Junior Division Physical Education (1959) and comments on the appropriateness of that material for today’s teachers; reflection on professional preparation programs in Great Britain and comparison with programs of today in Canadian universities; involvement with the Physical Education Section of the Ontario Education Association and with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER); professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to physical education, including: Jan Vallance; Ross Waters; Bing Caswell; Tom Hennesy; Jim Patterson; Olive Clark; Mary Lyttle; Marion Irwin; Jack McKenzie; Dorothy Walker and Eileen Reid; opinions on major accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including: general acceptance of the necessity of physical activity as part of the elementary school child’s curriculum and improvement in facilities and equipment for physical education; her personal views on the present state of physical education in elementary schools in Ontario; and a review of Ontario’s summer courses program, enrollment, decentralization and overseas courses.
