Interview of Mary Barker as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson at Barker’s home at Tigh Na Mara, in Ingonish, Nova Scotia, on the afternoon of 22 October 1978. Barker speaks about: her early days as a student at the Margaret Eaton School in 1922 to 1925; her early teaching experience at Branksome Hall and the Loretto Abbey School in Toronto from 1925 to 1932; experience and responsibilities at the University of Western Ontario from 1935 to 1941, with a description of the programs for women; memories of Florence Somers and the transition from the Margaret Eaton School to the School of Physical and Health Education of the University of Toronto; Second World War experiences and responsibilities in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps from 1941 to 1946, in Canada and overseas; her return to the University of Western Ontario and differences noted from her early experiences there; her work with the YWCA of Canada from 1949 to 1957, including responsibilities, the qualifications of staff and programs offered for girls and women; her service in the National Advisory Council for Fitness and Amateur Sport from 1963 to 1965; her opinions on the role of the National Advisory Council; relationships with professional staff; the idea of a National Training Centre; community involvement on Cape Breton Island, including work with Gaelic singers and dancers; fishing dory races at Ingonish and ski instruction programs for children; and comments on close professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to physical education, sport and recreation in Canada, including: Mary Hamilton; Florence Somers; Iveagh Munro; Zereda Slack; Marion Ross; Jean Carmichael; Helen Gurney; Blackie Blackstock; Jack Passmore; Gordon Wright; John Tett and Charles Box. In conclusion, Barker gives her impressions of Dr. Robert Tait McKenzie’s sculptures and memories of the Mill of Kintail, McKenzie’s former summer home near Almonte, Ontario, which was turned into a museum of McKenzie’s work.
