Interview of Iveagh Munro as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Munro’s apartment in Montreal Quebec on the afternoon of 19 September 1978. She speaks about: her early days as a student in the McGill School of Physical Education from 1920 to 1922; her early teaching experiences in schools in Montreal, St. Thomas, Ontario, Connecticut and the YMCA in New York City in the 1920s; her introduction to teacher-preparation at the State Teachers College in Danbury, Connecticut; circumstances resulting in her transfer to the teaching staff of the McGill School of Physical Education in 1939 and the responsibilities she assumed; reminiscences of Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; the organizational structure of the McGill School of Physical Education in the 1930s and the 1940s; other staff members of the McGill School of Physical Education in the 1930s and the 1940s; her thoughts on some of the significant changes that have occurred at McGill over the years and their effect on the staff and on programs; her personal philosophy on specialization and on professional obligation; the McGill Ski School of the early 1940s; recollections of early days of the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER) and her tenure as President of the Association from 1950 to 1952; international involvement with the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the International Association for Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women; the brief from CAHPER to Paul Martin concerning the Repeal of the National Physical Fitness Act in 1954; the First National Conference of Professional Schools granting the Bachelor’s degree in physical education, held in 1951; the role of CAHPER; a discussion of Bill C-131, the Fitness and Amateur Sport Act of 1961, and its effect on physical education; thoughts on the evolution of physical education for girls and women in Canada; significant program changes over the years; thoughts on the intercollegiate athletic competition for women in Canada; her recollection of women physical educators in Canada who have made significant contributions to the profession, including Zereda Slack, Marion Ross, Florence Somers, Ethel Mary Cartwright, Jessie Herriott and Mary Barker; and her opinions on significant accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including the development of undergraduate degree programs, recognition by the public, the development of a strong professional association and the increase in the number of highly-qualified professionals in the field.
