A short documentary film which looks at the early achievements that contributed to the development of the motion picture as it is known today. The film briefly discusses the many different technologies used to create a moving image and subsequently project the images so that people would be able to view them. Early motion picture technologies such as the thaumatrope, phenakistiscope, zoetrope, praxinoscope and Thomas Edison's kinetoscope or "peep show" are discussed to establish a historical time line of the medium. Through the use of archival footage the film talks of the importance of moving image footage as a medium for historical documentation and underscores this with footage of United States Marines returning from Cuba after the Spanish - American war, shots of various naval vessels and an army training film for the proper use of a Gatling gun, dated 1897. Also presented is the first copyrighted film and an explanation of how paper prints were used to establish copyright. <20mn 56s>
