Second in a thirteen part series on the Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker, concentrating on his career as a lawyer. Paintings, graphics, and archival photographs illustrate his discussion with interviewer Douglas Rain about: his childhood with a "strong-willed" mother, "gentle, school-teacher" father and "devoted" brother; his early reading; his youthful pastime of attending court; the immigrant and Indian population of Wakaw, Saskatchewan, where he began his law practice in 1919; his concern for the rights of the individual, reinforced by the Louis Riel case and two of his criminal cases, the Canoe River Trial and the Hicks Case; his opposition to capital punishment and his personal struggle over allowing Canada's last legal hanging in 1962; and the Canadian Bill of Rights document, passed in 1960. <30mn>
