Description :

In 1973 the film Marshland Summer won first prize in a competition sponsored by the American Association for the Conservation of Information. Third in the Trilogy of Manitoba Wildlife, with a focus on the marshlands the viewer is introduced to the creatures and ecosystems existing in and around the wetlands, a stop for many birds, the source of water for all animals in the area and the year round home for the amphibious. Beautifully photographed from a safe distance Cotter concludes this trilogy with a silent respect for the untouched paradises of the natural world.

1.Although included in this Crawley Films accession no confirmation could be found that any of the three films in this series were produced by Crawley Films Ltd. There is documentation that The Trilogy of Manitoba Wildlife films were produced by Cotter Wildlife Productions a company based in Winnipeg and owned by George Cotter the director and Cinematographer of this series as well as many other award winning nature films~2.Born George Stuart Grenfell Ironside Cotter in 1915 into a family firmly seated within the history books of this country. His grandfather James Cotter responsible for managing Hudson Bay Company outposts on Moose Factory Island as well as the settlement of Whale River in northern Quebec, was also a pioneer of early photography. Credited with a collection of prints documenting the struggles of man's effort to take a foothold in the harsh environment of the Canadian north. Some of his prints circa 1872 can be found within the collections of both the LAC as well as the HBC archives under the name J.L.Cotter.~3.For each title within this trilogy of wild life films the only elements currently found from this accession are the ¼” final mix audio masters and a work print cutting copy. There are optical tracks printed onto the work prints, but only a small percentage of the scenes have any actual sound, the majority of it just printed silence. The prints are useful as a visual reference but without titles and badly damaged they give only a glimpse of what the finished projects would turn out to be. At the point of writing these vault records no other elements for these titles were found.
