Commissioned by the Nova Scotia Department of Trade and Industry as part of the Nova Scotia Information Services, this film chronicles a day in the life of a Caper Islander fishing boat in and around Clark's Harbour of Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia. The film opens with an introduction to this picturesque seaside village, the fishing boats in the harbour, the nearby forest, local fisherman, lobster traps and nets drying in the sun. The film then moves in to document the many stages of building the wooden fishing boat, from carving the keel out of a hardwood to fastening the ribs with galvanized steel bolts. A family tradition handed down from father to son, a legend in its own time the Cape Islander boat, first built and designed by Ephraim Atkinson in 1907 and continued by his son Herb. Then from the boats perspective we follow some fishermen out on a day's work, casting of nets and traps and the hauling of a day's catch. As well as a families trip out and around the harbour, on a modified Cape Islander getting a close up look at some sea urchins and a starfish in a tidal pool. A trip to the Sambo Island lighthouse and the Devils steps complete their sea adventure.
