This is a radio profile of Joseph Atkinson of the Toronto Star by those who worked for him. The program consists of excerpts of interviews by Marjorie McEnaney. Items include: Gordon Sinclair talks about Atkinson; Marjorie McEnaney describes his career; James Cowan and Wilfrid Eggleston speak about working for him; William R. Plewman recounts how he got his job and he calls Atkinson a "genius" and "an amazing man"; Gregory Clark calls him a sly man who liked humanity but not people and who had a gift for "picking men"; Morley Callaghan talks about Harry Indmarsh as does Wilfred Eggleston; Frank Chamberlain describes the close control that Atkinson kept over the Star and his personal contacts with him; Gregory Clark outlines Atkinson's views on friendship and how he dealth with Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King; George Maitland and Edward Dix describe Atkinson's successful attempt to keep a union out of the Star; Morley Callaghan describes being fired by Harry Hindmarsh and describes the seemingly contradictory nature of Atkinson who would fire people, yet give thousands of dollars anonymously to charity; Morley Callaghan describes how the Star faked stories about liquor; Angela Burke recounts her experiences with the Star and disagrees with the opinion held by others that it had lost its razzle dazzle nature; W.B. Plewman feels the Star has lost its flavour because most of what it fought for has come about; and Morley Callaghan sees hope and the resurgence of the old razzle dazzle Star. <50mn>
