There is a place just over your shoulder and a little to the left where live common characters of uncommon substance. In Pieces of Eight, these characters are exposed, one by one by George, the film's unwitting host and questionable illusionist. Through his poetic ramblings, George observes and reveals a depth to these solitary lives that is at first unimaginable. Does George really know these eight souls and their innermost thoughts? Is he a channel through which the lives of lonely characters flow? Or is he simply a harmless old man playing solitaire? These questions and others remain unanswered until the final frame of this strangely alluring, wonderfully photographed journey through the lives of the patrons of a common diner one uncommon evening. <8mn>
