Press conference held by Shirley Carr, President of the Canadian Labour Congress concerning recent meetings in London, England of Commonwealth trade-unions relating to proposed Commonwealth sanctions against South Africa. In her opening statement Carr outlines the nature of trade-union involvement in bringing about change in South Africa; discusses the commitment of Commonwealth trade-unions to the cause of bringing an end to the repressive régime in that country; and describes the steps currently being taken in the form of financial and moral support to South African trade-unions, boycotts of South African products in Canada and lobbying of the Canadian government to support economic sanctions by Commonwealth countries. Among the issues raised in the question period are: Prime Minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher's refusal to meet with trade-union representatives, including black South African representatives from COSATO and CUSA; the recent incarceration and harassment of these representatives in South Africa and their response to Thatcher's alleged support of blacks in their country; the effect of sanctions on jobs in Canada; the problem of security of people in the Front Line States; and the status of Canada's invitation to Oliver Tambo, President of the African National Congress.
