Press conference held by the Committee on the Pricing of Domestic Wheat and its Products. Chairman Arnold Malone informs the press that the Committee has just tabled its recommendations in the House of Commons. In examining the difficult position of the Canadian wheat farmer, says Malone, the Committee identified the real source of the problem as low export prices in general, resulting from heavily subsidized programs in Europe and the United States. The nine recommendations made are designed to compensate producers and guard against undue price regulation. Claudy Mailly, M.P. and Vice-Chairperson of the Committee, comments in French and English about the temporary nature of these solutions to the international problem of wheat pricing. Dr. Maurice Foster, M.P. and Lorne Nystrom, M.P., also Committee members, add comments expressing their desire to help farmers through this crisis. Questions include concerns about prices for wheat product consumers; rebates for low-income consumers; and whether an increase in price will affect free-trade negotiations. <30mn>
