Sound recording of radio broadcasts of: an orchestral concert, including Glenn Gould as piano soloist; a performance by the Little Symphonies Orchestra with piano soloist Edwina Heller.~The orchestral concert is broadcast on radio from Toronto, with Nicholas Goldschmidt conducting. The works performed are: Piano Concerto No. 5 in F Minor [BWV 1056?] (composed by J.S. Bach), with Glenn Gould as piano soloist; the symphonic poem Le chant du rossignol = The Song of the Nightingale (comp. Igor Stravinsky). An announcer introduces the works and the performers. He states that this is Gould's first Toronto appearance after his recent tour of Moscow, Leningrad, Berlin, and Vienna.~The Little Symphonies Orchestra [= l'Orchestre des petites symphonies] performs Concerto in D Minor [K. 466?] (comp. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) on 1 April 1956 under the direction of Roland Leduc, with piano soloist Edwina Heller, as part of the CBC Radio series Little Symphonies. Following the performance, an announcer introduces the work and the soloist. Little Symphonies is followed by unidentified music for solo piano and for orchestra. <1h 15mn>

1. Other extent, physical details information: 1 audio reel : acetate, 2 sides, 3.75 and 7.5 ips ; 18 cm in diam.~2. The audio reel box is marked "Hirvy", and this sound recording is one a group listed under the heading "Hirvy" in Chotem's classical index. It is possible that the recordings were made by, and received from, Chotem's teacher and friend Michel Hirvy.~3. Gould toured Moscow, Leningrad, Berlin, and Vienna in May 1957, and his performance on this sound recording no doubt dates from that year.~4. Brittle tape in poor condition near the inner end of the recording. Several breakages repaired during playback. Duration is approximate. None of the breakages occurred in the section of the recording with the Gould music, which is in relatively good condition.~5. The concert from Toronto with Gould and Goldschmidt is heads out at 7.5 ips on one channel. The Little Symphonies Orchestra with Heller is tails out at 7.5 ips on the other channel; it is followed by the unidentifed music for solo piano, tails out at 3.75 ips, and then by the unidentified music for orchestra (sound quality poor), tails out at 7.5 ips.
