This series documents the activities and interests of the NAFC in Aboriginal health and welfare issues. The NAFC has been actively involved in lobbying for the participation of friendship centres within any healing strategy or initiative, in order to increase the capacity to design and implement health-related programs and services for urban Aboriginal populations through friendship centres and Provincial-Territorial Associations.

As for example, NAFC is active in developing and promoting HIV/AIDS related programs being offered in friendship centres; and was involved in the development of a Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) youth project that aims to raise awareness, provide information, and motivate Aboriginal youth to explore a career in the health field.

In January 1998, the Aboriginal Health Intervention Toolkit was initiated by the NAFC as a means of improving the health conditions of the urban Aboriginal population. The Aboriginal Health Intervention Toolkit (AHIT) consists of an information package that is designed to assist program designers, administrators, and deliverers in the implementation of effective health program interventions within Aboriginal communities. The AHIT was funded by the Population Health Directorate of the Health Promotion and Programs Branch of Health Canada. A program coordinator and a research assistant were hired externally by the NAFC to oversee the development of the AHIT. These positions reported directly to the NAFC Policy Analyst, who reported to the Executive Director of the NAFC. Close contact with Health Canada was maintained throughout the development of the project.

This sub-series should be considered complementary to sub-series 2-d) « Canadian Public Health ».
