Sound recording of the 22 January 1960 edition of the radio series CBC Variety Hour, broadcast live from Montreal. This edition features: the CBC Montreal Concert Orchestra, under the direction of conductor and arranger Neil Chotem; and folk singer Jacques Labrecque. Included are performances of: What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor; Un petit boogie (composed by Jean-Paul Filion), sung by Labrecque with guitar accompaniment by Tony Romandini; Song for Sarah (comp. Edmund Assaly), with the composer at the piano; If You Ever Go to Paris (comp. Dorothy Mann and Tommy Connor), sung by Labrecque; The Sleigh, featuring three trumpets; Quartier latin (comp. Labrecque and Gilles Vigneault), sung by Labrecque with guitar accompaniment by Romandini; Opus Minus (comp. Chotem), featuring Guido Basso on trumpet; Song for Audrey, composed by the orchestra's first oboist Melvin Berman and featuring George Lapenson (violin); Bachelor's Hall, a Newfoundland folk song collected by Kenneth Peacock and sung by Labrecque; the piano prelude La soirée dans Grenade (comp. Claude Debussy), arranged by Chotem for orchestra; L'abattage, sung by Labrecque; Meadowlands, a Russian folk song arranged by Chotem in a jazz style for piano, bass, and percussion; unidentified folk song interpreted by Labrecque; Duke Ellington Suite (arr. Chotem), comprising The Duke (comp. Dave Brubeck), Caravan (comp. Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington), Take the A Train (comp. Billy Strayhorn), Sophisticated Lady (comp. Ellington). The selections are introduced in English and French by hosts John Grenfell and Yolande Champoux. Quartier latin is preceded and followed by a discussion between Labrecque and Champoux, and L'abattage is followed by a discussion between him and Grenfell. <59mn 18s>
