Documentary about Chinese communities in the Toronto area. Subjects discussed include: Chinatown in downtown Toronto and the development of Chinese and other Asian communities in other neighbourhoods such as Richmond Hill and Markham; the affluence of the Chinese community and accusations that opposition to them is a combination of envy and racism; zoning delays for the project by developer Henry Lam to build an Asian theme mall in Richmond Hill; ethnic zoning; the willingness of the newer generation to fight for the Chinese community, spearheaded by immigrants from Hong Kong; the creation of the Chinese-Canadian National Council; discrimination against the Chinese community in Canada; language barriers; the efforts by the Ming Pau newspaper to help Chinese people to adjust to life in Canada and to help other Canadians to understand the Chinese community; and the younger generation speaking only English, not Chinese. Interviewees include: Richmond Hill Mayor William Bell; developer Henry Lam; some residents of Richmond Hill who immigrated from Hong Kong; family physician and community activist Joseph Wong; Amy Go, a social worker in Toronto and her sister, Avy Go, a lawyer with the Metro Toronto Chinese and East Asian Legal Clinic; Irene [Chu] of Markham, who runs a private trading company specializing in Chinese development in Canada, and was a citizenship court judge and a member of the Immigration and Refugee Board; and [Vivian Chong], Toronto news editor of the newspaper Ming Pao. Actuality includes: people chanting at a protest march in 1979 by Chinese Canadians outside the offices of CTV, angry about a documentary broadcast by CTV on its program W5, called “Campus Giveaway”, about Chinese students in Canadian universities; and Elizabeth Gray shopping in a Chinese grocery store. <20mn 32s>
