Documentary broadcast as part of a special edition of the CBC Radio series SUNDAY MORNING, about the start of the Persian Gulf war this week. Reporter Elizabeth Gray reports from Jerusalem. Earlier in the SUNDAY MORNING program, host Mary Lou Finlay interviews Gray about conditions in Jerusalem, which schools are still closed but the situation is one of “cautious normalcy” and about the progress of the war so far. The documentary is about life in Jerusalem as it braces against missile attacks from Iraq. Interviewees include: Ari Rath of the Jerusalem Post; a man in a supermarket, going about his usual routine despite the threat of an attack; an American immigrant and her daughter; a taxi driver and other residents. Actuality includes: Jews praying for rain at the Western Wall; an “end of the world party” at a disco; and excerpts of radio news reports in Israel. Gray speaks about the warnings going off at her hotel and plays audio of one of the announcements. She also plays a clip of a French journalist filing a report via his cellphone while he is wearing a gas mask and watching the news on CNN. There is also actuality of journalists in the sealed room where Gray and other journalists have taken shelter, and audio instructions on what to do in the event of an attack. <28mn 37s>
