Sound recording of the 27 November 1959 edition of the radio series CBC Variety Hour, broadcast live from Montreal and featuring the CBC Montreal Concert Orchestra under the direction of Neil Chotem. The programme begins with a musical salute to the Grey Cup match the next day between the Hamilton Tiger Cats and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, in the form of performances of: The Grey Cup March = Trades Man [Tradesman] (composed by Chotem); Jane Grey (comp. Chotem); One for Hamilton (comp. Al Baculis); the medley Prairie Junction (arranged by Chotem), which includes the songs Red River Valley and Bury Me Not. The programme continues with a salute to St Andrew's Day: Charlie Is My Darlin' (traditional); medley from Brigadoon, comprising Almost Like Being in Love, Heather on the Hill (comp. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe); a medley of Scottish folk songs titled Tams off to St Andrew = Songs of Scotland, with Chotem at the piano. These are followed by performances of two works by Montreal composers: Ode to a Gone Girl, composed by Edmund Assaly, who is also at the piano; Windy City (comp. Baculis). The programme concludes with: theme from the motion picture Picnic (comp. George Duning [sometimes credited as Dunning], arr. Melvin Berman); The Syncopated Clock (comp. Leroy Anderson); That's All; final movement from Symphonie espagnole (comp. Edouard Lalo), with the violin solo by the orchestra's concertmaster George Lapenson; Yesterdays (comp. Jerome Kern). The selections are introduced in French and English by hosts Jeannine Paquet and John Grenfell. <59mn 29s>

1. Other extent, physical details information: 1 audio reel : acetate, 7.5 ips ; 25 cm in diam.~2. Chotem's list of song titles on the audio reel box label gives the title Trades Man for the composition announced as The Grey Cup March; his classical index confirms that Grey Cup March is a re-titling of his composition Tradesman (also known as The Tradesmen). Similarly, the medley announced as Tams off to St Andrew is listed as Songs of Scotland.
