This map shows the route of the transatlantic telephone cable system which came into service 25 September 1956. The cable was a joint undertaking of the Canadian Overseas Telecommunication Corporation, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and the British Post Office. It was the first long-distance telephone cable under any ocean. Transatlantic telephone service began in 1927 by means of the radiotelephone. This type of service was subject to frequent interruption through various types of interference and the cable constituted a great improvement.
