The Red River Settlement developed at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers on land granted to Lord Selkirk by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1811. By 1869, the settlement was a vibrant community, with a free enterprise system and established judicial and civic institutions, centred on the retail stores, hotels, trading undertakings and saloons. The Métis were the dominant demographic group in the Settlement, comprising around 85 percent of the population, and held leadership positions in business, church and government.
