George Browne began the work on the plans for a town hall in 1842. Contracts were let out in 1843 and the building was ready for occupancy the following year. This part of the building is also known as the "Shambles". It contained various shops and stalls for butchers and hucksters as well as the "Green Market" where fresh farm produce is sold. In 1865 fire destroyed the "Shambles" which was later reconstructed on a smaller scale and without the clock tower and bell which surmounted the original building. This is one of eight plans of the Kingston town hall by George Brown, held by the N.M.C.
