This map shows oil exploration areas off the coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The grid system is based on degrees of latitude and longitude. Areas under federal exploration permit are indicated with a code number. Other areas are blank. A legend in the lower right hand columns give the area in acres of the grid squares at the corresponding latitude. The first figure gives the area of the full grid. The second gives the south half. The third the north half, and the fourth the east and west halves. This is one of four similar maps of Canada's coastal areas prepared by this Branch. These maps are reissued with changes when new information is gathered. According to officials at E.M.R. (telephone conversation, Aug. 1, 1973) new issues of the maps bear the date of the new issue in print. The fact that the [1971] map does not bear a printed date indicates that it might be an early issue, as early as 1966, when the maps were first printed. However, the supplied date is taken from the date which has been placed in the title block with a rubber stamp.
