From the Macdonald Papers M.G. 26A. Vol. 308. No. 140,249. This copy of the map was sent to Macdonald in a memorandum, re. Overland telegraph across Canada and a submarine Cable to Asia, by Sandford Fleming, on the 6th of July 1880. In his memo, Fleming states that he would like to obtain a certain Japanese island for use of the telegraph. This in effect would make the telegraph system independent of other nations and be of great advantage to the Imperial Government. Communications would be complete and efficient to all parts of the British Empire. Map referred to in Sandford Fleming Empire Builder. L.T. Burpee P. 156. This map Sir John Macdonald took to England and discussed with Lord Beaconsfield. Fleming went into detail about costs as well as preparing the map.
