Description :

Sound recording of an edition of the CBC Radio series Saturday Afternoon at the Opera, featuring a performance of the Canadian Opera Company's world premiere production of the opera Mario and the Magician (composer, Harry Somers; libretto, Rod Anderson; after a novel by Thomas Mann). In addition to the opera itself, the content includes: a panel discussion at a symposium after the premiere, including Somers, Anderson, director Robert Carsen, and conductor Richard Bradshaw, focussing on the collaborative approach in creating an opera; a conversation between host Howard Dyck and Somers, in which Somers discusses the process for possible changes to Mario and the Magician in the event of a second production, and possible subject matter if he composes another opera (he mentions returning to the Gilgamesh epic as a possibility); a documentary feature on the tenor Edward Johnson; and a spoof of Saturday Afternoon at the Opera by the satirical group Double Exposure. <4h 39mn>

1. Date established from secondary sources.~2. Audio cassette case labels give information on the contents of 5 of the 6 sides. The unnumbered and unlabelled side of the third cassette has content which is apparently part of the same programme.~3. The second cassette was jammed when received at LAC. The audio tape in it has been re-housed into a new cassette body to make it playable. The labelling on the original cassette was: Side A, " TAPE 2 Mario ACT I Sc. 3 cont. Sc. 4.5.6.7.8 / Int. talk"; and Side B, "ACT III - Sc. 2 cont'd Sc. 3.4.5. END / Final ann'ce".~4. Other extent, physical details information - 3 audio cassettes : polyester.~5. Sound recording forms part of the series “Sound and video recordings of musical performances” of the Harry Somers fonds (R12599).
