Within a scroll placed near the top middle of the original map is the name "Amtonio", which we presume is the Christain name of the author. The other half of the scroll, which undoubtedly contains the surname, is on the part that is lost to us. Armando Cortesao has suggested Antononie Pereira as the author. We understand, however, that as yet there is little confirmation of his statement. We are also indebted to Cortesao for supplying us a date for the map: about 1545. This date Lawrence Wroth, of the John Carter Brown Library, accepts as highly probable.
