The District of Assiniboia was a name used to describe the Red River Colony, mainly for official purposes, between 1812 and 1869. Generally, the area of settlement was centered at present day Winnipeg. It was limited to the Red River valley between Lower Fort Garry and Pembina, (North Dakota) and the Assiniboine River valley between Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie (Manitoba). In 1869, the transfer of Rupert's Land, including the District of Assiniboia without consultation of the residents of the settlement, led to the Red River Rebellion (Resistance) by Métis leader Louis Riel.
One can also find the terms "Old Assiniboia", "Red River Colony", "Red River Settlement" and the "Selkirk Settlement" to describe this pre-1870 settlement.

Scale Map shows the area of land in the District of Assiniboia granted to Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk, by the Hudson's Bay Company. The memorandum relates to the lack of precision in the surveys and outlines the boundary changes which might occur after re-surveying.
