This map was published in Sandford Fleming's: Report of 1880. It shows the development of the international telegraph system to 1880 with Fleming's proposed route for the Pacific cable and two proposed routes for a line linking Ottawa and Fort William. This route for the Pacific cable was selected since it was believed that a more southerly route would be impracticable because of the greater depth and severity of the ocean floor to the south. Fleming remained a promotor of the cable until it was completed in 1902. There are two copies of this map. The manuscript features on the H3 copy indicate the route that the cable finally took. Cables for the Indian and Atlantic Oceans are also shown in manuscript. With minor exceptions these were completed (see Bright's map). It is possible that the Manuscript features were added by Fleming himself since the land is very similar to his. The quality of the lithography of this copy is poor; many lines are obscured. The book copy in the PAC Library is superior.
