This map of the world shows three routes for the telegraph link between America and Asia: the first across the narrowest part of the Bering Strait, the second across the Bering Sea, and the third via the Aleutian Archipelago. The connecting lines to Europe and Australia are also shown. All telegraph lines appear on this printed map in manuscript. The idea of an overland route to Europe was promoted by an American, Perry MacDonough Collins. In conjunction with the Western Union Telegraph Company, the line was constructed as far as Quesnel, British Columbia by 1865, and in 1866 fifty miles beyond the Skeena River. When the second Atlantic cable was completed in June 1866, construction of the overland route was discontinued.
