Between 1829 and 1833 Captain John Ross of the Royal Navy conducted his second expedition in the Canadian Arctic in search of the elusive northwest passage. Ross failed in his attempt to locate the passage, however he did make important contributions to geographic knowledge of the Arctic, as the map indicates. Ross's nephew, James Clark Ross, who accompanied hin on the expedition, discovered in 1831, the North Magnetic Pole, the location of which is also given on this map. The map was printed facing page 1 in volume I of Ross's Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North West Passage ... published in 1835 by A.W. Webster.
