[The disputed area at the head of the Connecticut River]; 6.7 x 7.9.
This map appears to have been prepared by the Colonial Office after the King of the Netherlands, acting as an internation arbitrator, had made his ruling on the dispute concerning the boundary from the source of the St. Croix to the St. Lawrence Rivers. The claims of both Great Britain and the United States are shown with the decision of the arbitrator. Caution must be exercised when using this map: the award of the King of the Netherlands is not accurately drawn. Comparison with other maps shows that the award gave the U.S. more land north of the St. John River. It is therefore possible that the British authorites initially misunderstood the award. An ealier map held by the N.M.C. might have been used as a base for this map.
