This set of maps is composed of proposed township plans for Upper Canada. Most show proposed division into lots and the location of crown and clergy reserves. Some show additional features such as the proposed layout and location of towns. See items 2-25 for contents. 1. "Plan of a town and township of nine miles by twelve miles in depth proposed to be situated on a river or lake..."[14 March, 1789]. Enclosed in: Dorchester to Grenville, #25 Quebec, 27 may 1790. "Plan of a town and township of nine miles front..." #3 is similar to #2, but bears the signature Ts Chamberlaine, Nov. 28th and the year 1789 added in pencil. Source is unknown. (NMC 273) -- 4. "Plan of a town and township of ten miles square proposed for an inland situation..."[14 March, 1789]. Enclosed in Dorchester to Grenville #25, Quebec, 27 May 1790. -- 5. "Plan of town and township of ten miles square..." This is a map very similar to #4, except that it bears the Board of Ordnance stamp and a code presumed to relate to Ordnance's filing system. The date 1789 is added in pencil. Source of the map is unknown. (NMC 275) See also Ph. neg. of orig. in PRO -- 6. "Plan of a town and township of ten miles square..." This plan is similar to #5, except that it bears the signature Ts Chamberlaine and lacks a pencilled date. Source is unknown. (NMC 276) -- 7. "Plan of nine townships...showing the reservations for the crown A." [14 March 1789]. Enclosed in Dorchester to Grenville #25, Quebec, 27 May 1790. This is a companion map to #1 and #4 of this set. It shows a proposed layout of three river and lake-side townships and six inland townships. The map was originally located in MG 11, Q Series, vol. 44, pt. 1, p. 237. (NMC 277)

(NMC 278) see Ph. neg. of orig. in PRO -- 9. "Plan of nine townships...showing the reservations for the crown A." This plan is similar to #8, but bears the signature, Thos Chamberlaine, Decr. 5th. Source is unknown. (NMC 279) -- 10. "Plan of four inland townships exhibiting the reserves proposed...for the church and...the crown...intended as an explanation of the report of the Surveyor Genl. & Deputy Surveyr Genl. of the 24th September, 1792." "Plan of a river township exhibiting the reserves proposed to be located for the church & for the future disposition of the crown intended as an explanation of the report of the Surveyor Genl. & Dy. Surveyor General of the 24th September 1792." The plan has the date 1792 written on it in pencil. The precise source of the plan is unknown. (NMC 18261) -- 12. "The chequered plan for a township of nine miles front by twelve miles in depth supposed to be situated on a river or a lake..." This plan was originally enclosed in Simcoe to Dundas #17, York (late Toronto) Upper Canada, Sept. 16, 1793. The plan's original location was MG11, Q Series, vol. 279, pt. 2, p. 334a. Also included in the letter was a plan of Darlington Township in 1793 (See Note 1). (NMC 280)
-- 13. "Plan No. 4 [showing proposed distribution of crown and clergy reserves]". Notes on the plan indicate it conforms to "the extract from the Secretary of State's letter dated 2nd October 1793 'making the reserves for four lots in the center of those lots'". The precise source of the plan is unknown. The other plans in its series (i.e., No. 1-3) have not been discovered. (NMC 281) -- 14. "The chequered plan, diagram A." This plan, similar to #12 was originally located in the Index to the Report on Reserved Lands of Upper Canada by D. W. Smith, 9 Nov. 1795, itself an enclosure in Simcoe to Portland #34, Upper Canada, York, Dec. 22, 1795. The precise location of the plan was MG11, Q Series, vol. 282, p. 121. -- 15. "The cheqered plan discriminating the reserves of the crown from those of the clergy." Similar to #14, but discriminating between the kinds of reserves. The plan comes the same manuscript source as #14. Its precise location was MG11, Q Series, vol. 282, p. 122. See also #14, 16 and 17 in this set. (NMC 283) -- 16. "Diagram B on the principal of the chequered plan." From the same source as #14 and -- 15. Its precise location was MG11, Q Series, vol. 282, p. 123. See also #14, 15 and 17 in this set. (NMC 284) -- 17. "Diagram B on the principle of the chequered plan and discriminating the reserves of the crown from those of the clergy." From the same sources as #14, 15 and 16 of this set. Similar to #16 but discriminates between crown and clergy reserves. Precise location was MG11, Q Series, vol. 282, p. 124.
Included with #14 - 17 in their manuscript source were several other plans: "Plan for setting apart one seventh of land for the protestant clergy of 18 townships on the County of Lincoln, 1795" (See Note 2). "Plan for setting apart one seventh of land for the crown equal to one seventh set apart for the protestant clergy, of eighteen townships in the County of Lincoln...1795" (See Note 3). "Two sevenths of certain old townships in the Western District set apart for the crown and clergy" (See Note 4). (NMC285) -- 18. "The chequered plan discriminating the reserves of the crown from those of the clergy." Similar to #15. This plan was included in Extracts of a report...9 Nov. 1795, itself an enclosure in Hunter to Portland #11, 25 July, 1800. The precise location of the plan was MG11, Q Series, vol, 287, p. 165. -- 19. "A Diagram on the principle of the chequered plan discriminating the reserves of the crown from those of the clergy...for the Actg. Surv. General [D. W. Smith], Chewett and Ridout." Similar to #17, this plan comes from the same manuscript source as #18. The precise location of the plan was MG11, Q Series, Vol. 287, p. 166. (NMC 287) -- 20. "Suppose[d plan of] the Township of Newton." Originally enclosed in Plan by the Acting Surveyor General to lay additional fees and for rendering the clergy and crown reserves more remunerative. It has no date itself, but is enclosed in Russell to Portland, #39, Aug. 11, 1798. The precise location of the plan was MG11, Q Series, vol. 284, p. 276 b. (NMC 288)
-- 21. "Plot of 1,200 acres in the Township of Newton [sic] surveyed for Henry White." This plan is an enlargement of a portion of #19 in this series. It comes from the same manuscript source. Its precise location was MG11, Q Series, vol. 284, p. 276 a. (NMC 289) -- 22. "Sketch of the manner in which a township is laid out in Upper Canada", enclosed in Index to Appendix: Evidence and Information with Authorities: Evidence relative to Upper Canada submitted by Wilmot Horton to a Select Committee of the House of Commons. Drawn up at his request by Col. Talbot. N.D. [circa 1825]. The precise original location of the map was Mg11, Q Series, vol. 359, pt. 2 p. 519.
