This map portrays the area from the Gulf of Mexico to James Bay and from Lake of the Woods east to the Atlantic seacoast. The instructions for colouring specify that the U.S. be green, the British possessions red, the French fishery blue and the Spanish possessions yellow. However, these instructions have not been carried out accurately in either of the two maps. (Cf. Kerr: Historical Atlas of Canada, pp. 22-3; Gilbert: American History Atlas, p. 28). The map, which appeared in issues of Laurie & Whittle's: A New and Elegant Imperial Sheet Atlas (Phillips, 6009, 6016) is in fact a very lated issue of a map first produced in 1755 by Thomas Jefferys entitled "North America from the French of Mr. D'Anville..." (Stevens, n. 51).
