This map depicts the settlement of Battleford along the Saskatchewan River, across the river from North Battleford and north-west of Saskatoon. The map depicts the lots and streets superimposed on the actual state of affairs in Battleford, showing the real lots, indicating buildings, and giving names. It also shows trails.

The town was an important site during the Northwest Resistance (historically also called the Northwest Rebellion). In March 1885, the Cree led by Chief Poundmaker, as well as one Nakoda band, came to Fort Battleford to conduct negotiations with the Indian Agent concerning supplies and rations owed to them by treaty. Desperate for food and supplies due to the declining bison population, and against Poundmaker's wishes, some engaged in the looting of the abandoned township of Battleford. In perceived retaliation, a detachment of settler soldiers attacked Poundmaker's camp on April 31st. The battle ended in the detachment's retreat, as well as in a number of the Cree warriors joining the Métis cause at Batoche.
