This map was prepared for the Department of Public Works in 1879-1880 (see PAC RG II, Series 4). The proposed harbour is just west of Long Point in Lake Erie. The canal would enable vessels endangered by storms to find refuge without the necessity of circumnavigating treacherous Long Point. As early as 1833 the government of Upper Canada had been concerned with such an undertaking (See the Journal of the Legislative Assembly 1833-4, Appendix, pp. 186-8). The canal, proposed would link Lake Erie with an older canal, which joined Port Rowan Bay with Port Royal. The mouth of the older canal was east of Long Point and west of Port Rowan (See Pages 1877 Norfolk Co. Atlas, pp. 33-4). An 1885 D.P.W. map of the same area indicates a continuing interest in the project, although there is no record that the canal was ever built. There are detailed descriptions of soil conditions along the canal, and a detailed drawing of a lighthouse.
