This series of maps depicts islands in Georgian Bay which fall within the area shown on the key map (number 1 in this series). The series covers the Township of Thessalon in a clockwise direction to the Township of Cowper. Four maps are missing, numbers 5, 8, 9 and 10. The maps appear to be part of a larger series produced by the Surveys and Engineering Division of the Department of Lands and Forests. Numbers assigned to them by that division (e.g. "23F" in reference to "2. 23F.") relate to that larger series. The smaller series here catalogued has been a continuing one and the dates given in this entry are the earliest and latest dates of publication recorded in this smaller series. Dates of survey have been indicated in the entries for individual maps.
The maps show all islands within the area they depict and assign a specific number to each. Shoals have also been numbered, but to avoid confusion have not been outlined. Most of the maps indicate islands already patented or islands for sale. The mode of indicating this varies from map to map and the indexes of the individual maps should be consulted. The maps also indicate the location of roads and railroads, drainage and areas of swamp; some maps indicate lot and concession lines, and the location of lighthouses.
