This preliminary draft of Cook's "A plan of the Harbour of Halifax in Nova Scotia" gives soundings in the area from Cape Sambro to the Bedford Basin. There is also a small plan of Halifax which has an alphabetic explanation. As Cook wintered at Halfiax from 1758 to 61 the chart is probably derived from information he gathered during this period. Cook was also in the Halifax area in 1762 but as the inset of Halifax shows the first citadel which lasted from 1749-58 (The Halifax Citadel p. 4) the terminal date of 1760 has been assigned. As most naval personnel, Cook had high praise for Halifax harbour. "The Harbour of Halifax is without doubt one of the best in America sufficiently large to hold all the Navy of England with great safety." (Cook, Coasts of Nova Scotia).
