This map of Cape Breton by Holland was long considered lost. Five copies were made between 1766 and 1768 to accompany his "A Description of the Island of Cape Britain", none of them has ever been found. This impasse was broken when this copy was found among the papers of General Thomas Gage purchased by The William L. Clements Library. The original plan measures 37 1/2 x 26 1.2 inches border to border and is coloured. Details about the map and Holland's survey may be found in Shipton's article referred to in the notes. The littoral area of Cape Breton Island is shown and soundings are given. A table entitled "The Contents of the Respective Divisions of the Island of Cape Britain" enables one to tell at a glance the parishes in each county and townships comprising each parish. The table gives the acreages of individual townships, parishes, counties and the whole of Cape Breton (Shipton, p. 87). The map is of interest in the Anglicized place names Holland used and the interior divisions he drew up.
