This is a preliminary descriptive record. Series consists of records created and maintained by the Fish, Seafood and Production Division of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The series contains a wide variety of records related to: legislative and regulatory activities particularly with respect to the Fish Inspection Act and Amendments and Regulations; Legal Matters; Interdepartmental Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding with other federal government departments and agencies with respect to food safety and inspection of fish and seafood products; relations with the private and public sectors at the provincial and national levels; the Quality Management Program (QMP) system for fish and seafood products; policy and general files pertaining to Fish Product Inspection, including analysis and tests, standard procedures, codes of practices, trainining, etc.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Fish, Seafood and Production Division : Fish and seafood inspection was originally under the authority of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), but due to government restructuring, these functions were subsequently transferred in 1997 to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), newly created to consolidate all federally-mandated food inspection and animal and plant health services.
The Fish and Seafood Production Division was created by CFIA to develop and verify compliance with appropriate product and process standards that contribute to the acceptable quality, safety and identity of fish and seafood products that are processed in federal establishments or imported into Canada. Activities include: registration of federal fish processing establishments; inspection of imported fish and fish products; developing and maintaining international arrangements with countries with recognized inspection systems; inspection and enforcement of regulations, including enforcing label regulations; and residue testing. The Fish and Seafood Production Division enforces the Fish Inspection Act and Fish Inspection Regulations.
