Records in this fonds relate to work done by Neil Macdougall as a freelance photographer from the late 1940s until 2006 and to photographs Macdougall collected by other photographers. Photographs in this fonds predominantly show aircraft flown in Canadian airspace. These include civil, military, private, commercial and replica aircraft as well as, home-built unique designs, and sailplanes. While the majority of the aircraft are of Canadian or American manufacture, a number of European models are also present. Also included in the fonds are a small number of aerial views of the Canadian landscape.

Macdougall, Neil : Neil Macdougall (b.1927) has been associated with aviation since working as an aircraft spotter on the British Columbia coast during WWII. He began taking photographs of aircraft soon after the war and has continued until the present. In addition to photographing aircraft Macdougall's interest in aviation lead him to obtain various pilot licenses. Macdougall has also contributed to Canada's aviation community by publishing articles related to flight and aircraft between the 1950s and the present day. While Macdougall pursued a profession not always directly related to his activities as a photographer, he began selling his photographs to various aviation related periodicals early in his career. In all of his work as an aviation photographer Macdougall consistently made meticulous notes documenting exactly what type of aircraft he was photographing as well as capturing information related to the date, location and when possible the name of pilot of the aircraft in question.
