Collection consists of: Wash drawings used to illustrate "Recollections of Canada", (London: Chapman and Hall, 1873). Works by William Carlile and Benjamin Hay Martindale. Also included is a bound volume entitled "Recollections of Canada". Volume includes a 20 page introduction entitled "Canada: From its discovery to the present time." Each of the 25 reproductions are accompanied by two or three pages of text. Works by William Carlile and Benjamin Hay Martindale. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, England (1873).

Twenty plates from a set of 25 were acquired from the images in "Recollections of Canada". The missing images are I-3, I-4, I-9, I-15 and I-24.
Information about this collection can be found in RG 37 "C" Series, Volume 334, File 1920 Spendlove (offer). The NA has a second copy of this volume, part of the Reford Collection Acc. No. 1973-18. For a complete list see the Artist File 705-312..

Signatures et inscriptions :

The volume bears the inscription "WH & L Stephens / from WW & ... Martins / Jan 1873". There is also a reference to "Sh 97-" and most pages are labelled "T VII C".
