Elizabeth Patterson Amherst (d. 1776) was the wife of Lieutenant General William Amherst.

William Amherst (1722-1781) was the youngest brother of Jeffrey Amherst, appointed commander-in-chief of the forces of North America in 1758. William accompanied his brother Jeffrey to Louisbourg in 1758, and was given £500 by the King (George II) because he brought the news of the capture of the fort. He also served with Jeffrey during the capture of Montreal in 1760. He subsequently commanded the expedition in 1762 to recapture St. John's, Newfoundland which had been captured by the French in June 1761. His journal describing these events was published in 1928: The recapture of St. John's Newfoundland, in 1762, as described in the journal of Lieut.-Colonel William Amherst, commander of the British expeditionary force (edited by Clarence Webster). His highest promotion was in 1779 as Lieutenant-General.
He married Elizabeth Patterson, "a celebrated London beauty" (Webster) in 1766. Their son, William Pitt Amherst, succeeded to the peerage bestowed on Jeffrey, because the latter had no children.

William was also the father of Elizabeth (1774-1826) who married John Hale, son of Lieutenant-Colonel John Hale who commanded the 47th Foot at Quebec in 1759 and was with the Major-General James Wolfe in the taking of Quebec) deputy paymaster general of the British troops stationed in the Canadas. The two of them established the Hale lineage in Canada by having 11 children. She lived in Quebec from 1799 until her death.

This painting, as well as that of Lieutenant General Wiliam Amherst, are copies of originals held by the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College in Amherst Massachusetts. the portraits at Amherst College, acquired directly from the Amherst family, are by Robert Edge Pine (1742-1790) (William) and Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) (Elizabeth).

David Martin (1736-1798) studied under Allan Ramsay and was chief painter to the Prince of Wales for Scotland. He was known as a portrait painter and exhibited at the Royal Academy.

Historique de la conservation :

Painting was donated to Library and Archives Canada in August, 2008. Prior to donor's possession, painting had been inherited by Dr. George Hale from two maiden aunts in England. Same two maiden aunts purchased this painting, along with painting of Lieutenant General William Amherst, at a July 1922 auction in London.
