Accession consists of approximately 90 large maps, plans, graphs and presentation panels; 33 rolled maps and charts, 146 small maps, charts and graphs; and 8 bound volumes containing text, maps, charts and graphs. Electronic versions (tiff or pdf) of each item are also included.

The maps, plans and other scientific records in this accession accompanied Applications and References presented to the International Joint Commission (IJC). Applications are submitted by the Government of Canada or United States, an individual or private corporation to seek the approval of IJC board for the use, obstruction or diversion of waters covered by the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty. References are submitted to the IJC where a question or matter of difference arises between the two Governments involving the rights, obligations, or interest of either in relation to the other or to the inhabitants of the other along the common frontier between Canada and the United States.

The majority of maps are crossed-reference to a docket (identified by a docket number) which holds textual records associated with each Application or Reference.
