Interview of the Right Honourable Roland Michener, former Governor-General of Canada, by author Peter Stursberg, about: Roland Michener; his family background; the Toronto fire of 1904; his father Edward Michener; his mother Mary Edith (née Roland); Red Deer, Alberta circa 1900-1920; Alberta; formation of the province of Alberta; the discovery of oil in the Turner Valley and the Leduc Fields; Roland Michener; his childhood in Red Deer; Edward Michener’s his business career, service as Mayor of Red Deer, election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in 1907, eader of the Conservative Opposition 1910-1918 and his appointment to the Senate in 1918; R.B. Bennett; a Boy Scout troop in Red Deer, Alberta circa 1910; settlement of Alberta; relations with Indians; Senator Edward Michener; his interest in oil exploration; mineral rights in Alberta; private and provincial ownership; Roland Michener; his education; enlisting in the Royal Air Force in 1918; his experiences during World War I; studying law at Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship 1920-1923; his difficulty in gaining admission to the Ontario Bar in 1924; Rhodes Scholarships, selection criteria; distribution and financial value; Roland Michener's athletic activities at the University of Alberta and at Oxford. <1h 45mn>
