pat2MARTIN MYSTERY is an animated series for teenagers loosely based on the Italian comic strip "Martin Mystère" created by writer Alfredo Castelli and drawn by artist Giancarlo Alessandrini, first published in Italy by Sergio Bonelli Editore in 1982. In the comic strip, Martin Mystère is a New York-born art historian, archaeologist, anthropologist, adventurer, writer, television producer and collector of unusual objects who devoted his research to the most enigmatic events and places of human history and who spent much of his early life studying in Italy where many of his adventures take place. In the strip, Martin is assisted in his adventures by Java, a mute and very strong Neanderthal Man he discovered in a hidden city in Mongolia. Martin's comic strip companion is the beautiful Diana Lombard who is also his long-time fiancé. The animated television series reimagines the title character Martin Mystery and Diana Lombard, here his step-sister rather than his fiancé, as sixteen-year-olds attending Torrington Academy, a high school in Sherbrooke, Québec. Martin and Diana are commissioned by the covert organization "The Centre", an undercover bureau specializing in mysterious and supernatural phenomena whose mandate is to protect the people of Earth from various alien, monster and paranormal threats. The two mismatched teenagers, assisted by the short green-skinned creature Billy, and Java, the caveman lost in time (and the only unchanged character from the comic strip), leave their high school classroom and enter the caves of the unknown with a secret mission to investigate the strangest paranormal enigmas and the slimiest beasts from beyond. Even though the series is created in Canada and Europe, its style is strongly influenced by Japanese anime. In this episode, Darla, one of Torrington's most "uncool" and least self-confident co-eds, stumbles upon an old mirror in the school's drama department. As she gazes into the mirror, she makes a wish to be beautiful and popular. Her wish comes true and the geeky Darla transforms into Darleen, an attractive girl that makes all boys go crazy. But, it turns out that the wish-fulfilling mirror is part of an ancient curse. Whenever a boy touches or is touched by the unpopular-turned-attractive girl, he morphs into a terrifying hungry beast and the only way to reverse the curse is for the girl to reverse her wish. When Martin asks Darleen out on a date, he touches her and transforms into a monster. If Darleen wants to reverse the curse and turn Martin back to normal, she has to become the unpopular Darla again - a tough decision. <23mn 3s>
