NORTHERN TOWN is a Canadian comedy mini-series shot entirely in the Yukon. During a cold spell in mid-January, a meteorite flashes across the sky, explodes in the atmosphere, and crashes to earth in the vast wilderness surrounding Henderson, a small town in Northern Canada. The event is witnessed by many residents in and around the community, including Brian, a young man who torpedoes his own best efforts at success. Inspired by this mysterious occurrence, Brian decides to go searching for the meteorite. Heinz, Brian's employer and personal critic tries to deter him, but without success. Brian gets some dubious help from Ivison, who helps him compile an aural ethnography of sightings and anecdotal accounts of the event from the community members with whom he talks. Through the point of view flashback device, different individuals recall the same event differently. In the course of the investigation, Bran is distracted by Mona, a beautiful local Wildlife officer. Brian's challenge also comes in the guise of two American visitors who are themselves interested in the mysterious entity seen in the sky. In the race to find the interstellar object, Brian tries to pit his Yukon street smarts against the intruding military might of the United States, such as it is in this frozen outpost. Permeated with gold rush metaphors, the series provides a sharp commentary on the power of greed, ambition, and good luck, underscoring an array of colourful lifestyles and the eclectic nature of life in a small northern town. In this episode, the two American military scientists, Hendy and Meadows, are becoming serious rivals in the search for the meteorite. Much to his partner's contention, Hendy develops a crush on Fran, matron of the local karaoke bar. When Meadows receives information from Bernie and Stevie that Brian has discovered something and is going out to search, the Americans decide to follow. Mona hears about this and decides to follow as well. <22mn 49s>
