This television documentary chronicles the life and career of Rudy Wiebe, one of Canada's most acclaimed writers. Wiebe was born outside of Edmonton in the Speedwell area of Saskatchewan in 1934. Renowned for giving a literary voice to Canada's aboriginals, Wiebe was a two-time winner of the Governor General's Award for English-Language Fiction (for "The Temptations of Big Bear" in 1973, and "A Discovery of Strangers" in 1994). He has been compared to Hemingway, Faulkner and Balzac for nimbly juxtaposing detailed historical fact with a thrilling fictional narrative. His novels, short stories, non-fiction books and groundbreaking epics are provocative and passionate, fascinating and wild stories that encompass the sprawling history and geography of Western Canada and, also, his Mennonite heritage. In the autumn of 2005, a Reel Girls Media film crew followed Wiebe around the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta as he reflected on his experiences in the Canadian Prairies, a landscape which has informed his destiny as a writer and which produced the profound stories for which he is celebrated. Wiebe candidly speaks about the death of his beloved sister when she was only seventeen, an event that later inspired his first published fiction; about his adolescence in Coaldale, a town with a tiny library which Wiebe used to visit on a regular basis; about Frederick M. Salter, Wiebe's professor from the University of Alberta who challenged him to write about Mennonites in Canada; about the heart-wrenching suicide of his young son; the Frog Lake massacre that was Big Bear's undoing; and his controversial collaboration with Big Bear's great-great granddaughter, Yvonne Johnson, a convicted murderer with whom Wiebe co-wrote the autobiography "Stolen Life : The Journey of a Cree Woman". Wiebe's other works include: "Peace Shall Destroy Many", a novel about Mennonites in Canada that launched his career writing historical literature about misunderstood people; "The Temptations of Big Bear", a novel about a famous Cree chief caught up in the Northwest Rebellion; "The Scorched Wood People", a revisionist portrait of Metis leader Louis Riel; and "A Discovery of Strangers", a novel about contact between the Dene people and the first Arctic expedition of explorer Sir John Franklin. Today, at the age of 71, Rudy Wiebe, one of the first non-aboriginal authors convinced that the experiences of Canada's natives were stories crucial to our collective memory, is still remarkably vital and prolific. Some of the people commenting on the life and career of Rudy Wiebe in this documentary include writers Aritha van Herk and Robert Kroetsch who champion Wiebe's idiosyncratic style and an Aboriginal filmmaker Gil Cardinal who recognizes Wiebe as an honourable custodian of history. <47mn 50s>
