Video report on the progress made to date on the CP Rail project to reduce the grade along the main line through the Rogers Pass in British Columbia. At the beginning and conclusion, host and narrator Steve Morris, the Senior Information Officer for CP Rail, talks briefly about the project to John Fox, Vice-President of CP Rail Special Projects. They look at a model of the site. Then, Morris tours the site and explains various stages in the construction. This is the largest CP Rail project since the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway line across Canada. The new westbound line will accommodate more traffic. The old rail line will handle only eastbound traffic. Project features shown or discussed in this video include: culverts to handle runoff from creeks; bridges such as the Mountain Creek Bridge; blasting; hydro-seeding newly-graded slopes to restore vegetation; a speeded-up sequence along a portion of completed track; straight portions of track; the elimination of as many curves as possible along the route; the concrete box culvert at Raspberry Creek; applying a waterproofing treatment to the completed Gully Bridge before the track was laid; CP Rail project director John Fox at the job site; building retaining walls along steep slopes; the third and last concrete box culvert, built at Surprise Creek; construction of a viaduct and its 44 piers; the Stoney Creek Bridge; the east and west portals of the Shaughnessy Tunnel; construction of the tunnel; the short surface route over Connaught Creek; a huge depression called the Bear Pit being filled in with tunnel muck; Mount Macdonald Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in North America; inside the Macdonald Tunnel; the different processes used to dig the tunnel; an animated representation of the tunnel ventilation system; and a recap of the main features of the project. <30mn 27s>

1. The cassette is labelled 1988-11-21 but the tape itself is copyright 1987.~2. Audio is mono.~3. Cassette identifies CP Rail in the statement of responsibility at the end of the tape, but the cassette label lists Reel Ideas and PFA Motion Picture and Video Laboratories as well as CP Rail (this probably indicates that CP Rail is the sponsor, that Reel Ideas was the actual production company responsible for shooting this video and PFA did the video duplication).
