GLOBAL METAL is a sequel to the documentary feature METAL, A HEADBANGER'S JOURNEY. In the original film, professional anthropologist and huge metal fan Sam Dunn traveled across North America and Europe to examine the impact of the West's "most maligned musical genre" on our society over the past thirty five years. The sequel leaves the West and goes global, exploring the transnational spread of heavy metal music that now affects people in culturally and, often, ideologically diverse countries such as Brazil, Japan, China, Indonesia, Poland, Israel, and Iran. Dunn finds that although these countries share a passion for many of metal's most popular superstars, each has also transformed and created its own unique form of metal. Picking up on the theme of the outsider from the original film, the director observes that despite the grand differences in geography, religion and socio-cultural contexts that separate metal fans, they are all interconnected by what they see as an authentic, individual way of expression in a world affected by different forms of oppressive forces, from mass-corporatism to tyrannical dictatorship. In that sense, heavy metal fans have become one nation - one family. In each country the director visits, he captures interviews with metal enthusiasts and, also, with experts who provide commentaries on various issues the documentary raises. Along the way, Dunn also reunites with many of his heavy metal heroes as he witnesses Iron Maiden perform for 40,000 fans in a soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro; KISS play to a sold-out hall in Jakarta; and Metallica rock an open-air festival in Tel Aviv. Whether it is Indonesian black metal, Brazilian death metal, or Iranian power metal, this type of music provides young people around the globe with a chance to express their own form of rebellion by combining the genre's main themes with indigenous sounds and narratives of cultural and spiritual struggles. And, although metal has been appropriated by mainstream culture at various points in its history, it remains, at its core, an underground form of music. <1h 35mn 9s>
