The accession consists of personal and biographical records (ca. 1957 - 2004), such as agenda planners (1977-1994); material related to the composer's studies (High School to Ph.D.); personal, professional, and official correspondence, including cv versions (1960s-1990s); university teaching and administration at University of Victoria and McGill University (1970 - ), and 2 GB of e-mail correspondence that include attachments of textual, graphic, and audio files. Cherney's university notes, including material relating to his Ph.D. dissertation; undergraduate notes from history and counterpoint classes with John Beckwith and others; and graduate notes of various seminars taken towards the Ph.D. in musicology at the University of Toronto. Cherney's M.Mus. was in composition with John Weinzweig. The correspondence includes letters from John Beckwith, Norma Beecroft, Harry Somers, Robert Cram, George Crumb, and several other prominent figures of Canadian and international musical life. Accession also includes almost one hundred compositions (1961-2004) written for a great number of musical formations. Material related to these compositions includes manuscripts, fair copies, and large mss folios; compositional working papers; sketches, including densely-filled sketch pads and sketch notes; and juvenilia (compositions before 1963). Several scores have an iconographic nature and are accompanied by elaborate graphic material. Concert programs (printed material ca. 1950 -) uniquely feature performances that include Cherney's compositions and document the dissemination of contemporary Canadian works over a period of more than forty years. Writings (ca. 1970s-) include the authorized biography of Harry Somers (published 1975); articles; lecture transcripts; and other writings. Photographs (ca. 1950 - ca. 1990) are of a personal and professional nature. Archival sound recordings consist of several audio cassettes and reels that document the performance process (i.e. rehearsals) for Cherney's, as well as other contemporary Canadian composer's works.
