WHEN THE MUSIC SPEAKS is a television series featuring original footage of band performances, shot at the Exposed Roots Showcase Concert, a musical extravaganza produced by the Canada Council between twenty second and twenty third of November 2003 at Maison De La Cultute Ahuntsic-Cartierville in Montreal, Québec. Canada Council brought together a group of fifteen bands from all across Canada in a showcase designed to promote some of the best Canadian aboriginal and world music artists recording and performing today. The idea behind the event was to create a greater awareness of the diversity of music being created in this country. The showcase resulted in an explosion of ingenuous imagination, originality and creativity reflecting Canada's new ethnic mix. Selected by peers through a process based on artistic merit and tour experience, each group played before a live audience for about twenty five minutes. Bajaj Films Productions videotaped this two day musical event and assembled the footage to create this series. Each episode, hosted by Harmony Rice, is dedicated to one band. This episode features the performance by Sandy Scofield who draws on her Metis, Saulteaux and Cree heritage as singer and songwriter to communicate a social and political message. Scofield's repertoire ranges from delicate satiny pop and rhythm to blues and rock. <24mn>
